We have put together some useful information to explain the hinges that we have available and explain some of the terminology that we use. Please see below and if you need any more information or are ready to discuss your needs with one of our experienced team please feel free to contact us.

Hinge Terminology

Hinge Terminology

The thickness of the material that the hinge is made from.

Overall dimension measured from one edge of the leaf to the other.

Diameter of rod which fits inside the knuckle.

The overall length of the hinge.

The circular part of the hinge through which a pin is passed.

The length of each individual knuckle.

The part of a hinge extending from the knuckle which moves around the pin.

Measured from the centre of the pin to the edge of the leaf.

The overall diameter of the knuckle which is the pin diameter plus the material thickness x 2.

Hinge Dimension Table

We have a large range of standard sizes available that we can make to order or manufacture your custom made hinges from.

The table below details the dimensions of each tool set that we have that will allow you to calculate what sizes would be most suitable for your project.

Material Types

  • Stainless Steel (304 2B Grade) – Stainless steel has a high resistance to corrosion. Extensively used for consumer products, service and recreational vehicles, appliances, architectural products, commercial and domestic kitchens, hospital equipment and all manner of food service applications. It withstands rusting, organic chemicals and a wide variety of organic material.
  • Galvabond – Galvabond® G2 steel is a hot-dipped, zinc-coated, commercial forming steel with a spangled surface, suitable for general manufacturing. Typical uses include air conditioning ducts, air conditioning panels, meter boxes, trailers.
  • Zincanneal– Materials such as Zincanneal® and Zincseal® are hot-dipped, zinc/iron alloy coated, and are suitable for coating prior to installation. Typical uses include exposed painted panels, non-exposed automotive panels, washing machines, door frames, switchboards, commercial refrigerators and freezers.
  • Aluminium (5005 Mill Grade)– Aluminium is a highly corrosive resistant material and has the advantage of also being lightweight; around one third the weight of steel.
  • Mild Steel– Mild steel contains the same properties as iron, although it has increased carbon content. Mild steel is relatively low cost and provides material properties accepted for many applications. However, this also makes it susceptible to rusting; this occurs when the material comes in contact with water and oxygen. Where salt is present, usually in salt water, the effect is exaggerated.
  • Brass– Brass is a mixture of copper and zinc and is strong, hard, and formable. It has a variety of applications due to its durability and looks and is a very popular metal alloy for products and applications in several industries. Typical applications including fasteners architecture, grillwork, appliances, locks, door handles.

Hinge Configurations

There are many different types of hinge configurations available? Please see our diagrams below explaining the different options available to you. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us and we would be happy to help.

PLAIN OR STANDARD HINGE

Leaves lay flat in an open position.

REVERSE ASSEMBLY HINGE

Neither leaf swaged. Opposing leaves extend laterally from opposite side of the pin. Leaves won't close to a parallel position.

SWAGING HINGE

Forming one or both leaves within the proximity of paint clearance toward or beyond the centre of the pin.

ONE LEAF HALF SWAGED

One leaf swaged one half of the pin diameter.

ONE LEAF FULL SWAGED

One leaf swaged equal to the pin diameter. Both leaves will be parallel when in closed position.

REVERSE SWAGED

One leaf swaged to simulate reverse assembly. Leaves will not close to a parallel position.

ONE LEAF HALF SWAGED

One leaf swaged one half of the pin diameter.

DOUBLE FOLD

Both leaves have a bend.

ODD LEG

One leaf is larger than the other leaf.
